A small plane crashed in San Diego on May 22 striking multiple homes and vehicles and prompting multiple evacuations in the area, local police and fire officials at the scene said. The crash, which set multiple homes in a military housing neighborhood ablaze and splattered jet fuel along its streets, took place in Tierrasanta, a community about 10 miles northeast of downtown San Diego, The plane crashed off Santo Road near Sculpin Street, the San Diego Police Department posted on X, adding an evacuation site was set up at Miller Elementary at 4343 Shields Street. People were being asked to avoid the area. It was not immediately known whether anyone on board the plane was injured or killed. Near the scene, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Assistant Chief Dan Eddy told reporters a private plane crashcaused about 15 homes to catch fire, as well as multiple vehicles. "I just walked it myself, and down the street itself, it looks like something from a movie," said Eddy, according toNBC News. Eddy said multiple homes were hit directly by the plane and HAZMAT teams had responded. "We have jet fuel all over the place," Eddy said. "And we've asked for more resources to come for that." As of mid morning, Eddy said no one had been transported from the scene "so far." "We are currently conducing multiple searches on homes," Eddy said. The plane crashed in a military housing neighborhood. As of mid morning, the number of people on board was unknown, FAA spokesperson Kevin Morris confirmed to USA TODAY. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the crash. USA TODAY has reached out to NSTB. This is a developing story.
