Kevin Sabitus // Getty Images Super Bowl Night is incoming on Dancing With the Stars , and fans were shocked to find out that the lineup doesn’t include former DWTS contestant and noted NFL sportscaster Erin Andrews. Instead Monday Night Football announcer Joe Buck will serve as guest judge, leading to some confusion among viewers who feel like, if the show wanted an NFL expert with a broadcasting background, Erin is a more natural fit.
Meanwhile, let’s not forget that Dancing With the Stars has featured multiple NFL players in the past, including Rashad Jennings, Donald Driver, Hines Ward, and Emmitt Smith—all of whom literally WON THE MIRRORBALL TROPHY.
So...what happened? Over on Reddit , fans are speculating that the decision to hire announcer Joe Buck comes down to his relationship with ABC, the network which airs Dancing With the Stars and will air the Super Bowl this year.
Plus, as one person on the platform notes, Joe just signed a reported $100 million contract with ESPN, which is a sister network to ABC. Cross-promotion between networks is not at all unusual, and with the Super Bowl coming up and Joe Buck being a commentator, this could very well be the reason he was chosen over Erin (who works for FOX), or a former player who won Dancing With the Stars.
It’s possible there will be some guest appearances in the audience on Super Bowl Night, so stay tuned. As we all know, Dancing With the Stars loves itself a surprise.
